A critical Round 8 today. I was paired with a strong Italian FM, Valerio Carnicelli (2394) with White. I mainly wanted to play for two results, and avoid risk at all costs, as my opponent is a sharp King’s Indian player (like me!). Nepo candidates style. The opening went well as I got some interesting preparation in, putting my opponent under pressure on the clock. Had he found the right moves, I was more than content with a draw.
But he then made a mistake and offered a draw on the same turn. It was quite a conflicting moment for me — on the one hand, I was already happy with a draw, given with the tournament situation. On the other, perhaps I could try to win and really put the tournament away. Not to mention the benefits of playing a difficult game in a difficult round.
I’m not sure if I made the right call, but I accepted the draw. Even knowing that after 15.Nxc4 White would have a clear plus. I find it hard to play when you mix playing for a draw with playing for a win, and was worried I would screw things up. Whether this was the right decision or not will likely depend on the outcome of the tournament.
Kavutskiy - Carnicelli, Montesilvano 2024
6/8. Still leading by a half-point, but the last round will be very tough. I’m playing Black against GM Arkadij Rotstein, one of the strongest and most experienced players in the event. A win will clinch it, while a draw will likely share first. I expect a big fight and will do my best, while hoping to also enjoy the stress and pressure of the decisive moment. Wish me luck!
